Mandana Karimi, the Iranian actor and model who has appeared in several Hindi films, including Roy and Main Aur Charles, recently shared that she consciously switched to interior design as a profession. Along with discussing her career trajectory, the 36-year-old opened up about finding hot water fasting highly soothing after taking long-haul flights.
“What works for my body is… if I have travelled a lot and eaten a lot of meat, flight food, etc, when I come back home, I only have hot water for a day. The next day when I wake up in the morning, I feel so much lighter, my gut’s cleaned and it’s faster. It feels like I have taken IV drips. It feels refreshed,” Karimi told actor and host Rohit Bose Roy on his Unstoppable podcast.
Taking a cue from her admission, let’s understand how a hot water fast affects the body.
“Although drinking sufficient water and staying hydrated is considered beneficial, only sustaining on hot water for a longer duration can lead to several health complications. This particular type of fasting does more harm to your body than good,” said Jinal Patel, dietitian, Zynova Shalby Hospital Mumbai.
While fasting without eating food for less than a day like Karimi may work for some, it can lead to problems like nutrient deficiencies, fatigue, nausea, and muscle loss for many others, Patel stressed.
“One may feel tired and less energetic, which can significantly affect their mood, making them cranky. Over time, it may influence sugar levels, resulting in low blood sugar levels, which can make one feel dizzy all day long. Hot water fasting may not be suitable for everyone,” Patel said.
Those with certain chronic health conditions, children, pregnant women, and the elderly should avoid trying this particular type of fasting, stressed Patel.
“Always consult your dietician before making any new changes to your diet or trying diets like hot water fasting. Your doctor may help you weigh this diet’s potential side effects and benefits to make an informed decision. Remember, skipping your meals is a big no-no. Always try to maintain a healthy balance by eating well-balanced meals, exercising regularly, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and drinking plenty of water,” said Patel.
