In a heartwarming pre-Ramadan gesture, King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Darjeeling Express, a popular Indian restaurant in London, on February 26.

The royal couple actively participated in community service, assisting in packing boxes of dates traditionally eaten at sunset to break the Ramadan fast.

The visit was documented on The Royal Family’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, which posted a video of Their Majesties participating in the initiative.

The caption read: “Packing dates at Darjeeling Express! Traditionally, dates are eaten as the first food to break the fast at sunset during Ramadan. Their Majesties helped pack dates that will be sent to local hospitals for Iftaar during the holy month.”

During the visit, Asma Khan, acclaimed chef and owner of Darjeeling Express, was taken aback by the King’s efficiency in packing donation boxes. “I didn’t realise the King would be so fast!” she exclaimed in a video posted by the Royal Family’s Instagram.

King Charles, known for his sharp humour, quipped back, “I don’t waste time.” His enthusiasm even led to a lighthearted moment when Khan playfully remarked, “You are packing dates faster than I can seal them!”—eliciting laughter from the King and onlookers.

The humour didn’t stop there. Khan later commented, “I never realized this is a speedy couple,” drawing even more chuckles from those gathered.

Beyond date-packing, the royal couple stepped into the restaurant’s kitchen, where they worked alongside Asma Khan and head chef Asha Pradhan to prepare biryani. These meals were donated to Doorstep, a London-based organisation supporting families searching for permanent housing.
