Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh have previously shared the mindful changes they made to their diets to turn vegetarian. In a similar vein, Genelia recently revealed that Riteish doesn’t drink coffee and chai (tea). “I drink green tea,” Riteish quipped in a rapid-fire with Hauterrfly.

Taking a cue from the couple’s admission, let’s find out what happens to the body when you have green tea regularly.

Green tea has plenty of health benefits as compared to milk coffee and tea, said Sonia Bakshi, nutritionist and founder, DtF.

She listed some of the benefits

Heart: Green tea may help lower total cholesterol and raise HDL (good) cholesterol.
Weight: Green tea boosts metabolism, which in turn may help you lose weight.
Mental alertness: Green tea improves mental alertness and mood.
Digestion: Green tea helps in reducing harmful gut bacteria.
Skin: Green tea may help in reducing skin inflammation.
Stress and anxiety: Green tea may help alleviate anxiety and stress. Green tea has one-third the amount of caffeine as compared to milk coffee, making it a better choice for those sensitive to anxiety concerns.
Blood sugar: Green tea may help manage blood sugar, too.

What to note?

Some ingredients found in green tea extracts have shown some potential effects on body weight. “Nevertheless, these effects are modest compared with those that can result from adhering to good nutrition and lifestyle practices like a healthy diet,” said Veena V, dietician, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru.

Green tea should not be had on an empty stomach as it can lead to stomach discomfort, acidity, heartburn and an increase in stress hormones, said Bakshi. “Compared to this, milk coffee can be had on an empty stomach. However, both should not be had with a meal as they reduce iron absorption from food. Maintain a minimum of one hour gap between meal and milk coffee/ green tea,” said Bakshi.

While green tea might offer a temporary solution to curb hunger, it is essential to aim for sustainable fitness, which is best achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices, said Veena.
