Make your Ganesh Chaturthi special with this amazing modak recipe

Whenever one thinks of celebrating the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, and bringing “Bappa” into one’s home, it is usually followed by the thought of offering modaks, Lord Ganesha’s favourite, to the deity. And what better way to do that than by making those delicious modaks yourself! The delectable dumplings are extremely popular in Maharashtra and while there are numerous versions of the delicacy, we bring you the recipe for making the time-tested classic modaks to add flavour to your festival.

There are different ways to make modaks – you can choose to either steam or fry them, though most people usually prefer the former. Also over time, cooks have experimented with the filling as well. From the traditional coconut filling, to the more experimental baklava and gulkand.

This recipe here comes from Chef Subrata Debnath, Executive Chef, Vivanta by Taj, Gurgaon, and is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and make your cooking skills famous.

Ingredients
1 cup – Rice Flour
½ cups – Water
½ tsp – Ghee
A pinch of Salt
1 cup – Grated Coconut
¾ cup – Jaggery
¼ tsp – Cardamom Powder
A pinch of Nutmeg Powder
½ tsp – Poppy Seeds

 

Method

* Heat ghee. Add the grated coconut, jaggery, spices and salt and cook on a slow flame until well combined.

* Prepare a soft dough using rice flour, water and ghee.

* Roll out small discs. Place a small amount of the coconut-jaggery mixture and wrap the modak. Using a few drops of water, seal the modak properly.

* Steam the modaks for about 10 minutes until the wrapper becomes translucent.

* Serve.
