The jolt from a sudden hamstring sprain or other injury can set you off track from your daily routine. Moreover, if you are one of those who works out regularly, it can be tough for you to slow down — physically as well as mentally. While the old way of recovering from an injury is to find someone to fix you, cut down on all exercises that may cause pain, and take plenty of rest, the new way to recover from an injury is to take an enhanced recovery approach with the help of experts, mentioned Dr Caleb Burgess, a certified specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy in a post on Instagram.

Gradually returning to activity is crucial to prevent reinjury and complications. Rushing back into strenuous activities can exacerbate the injury, and patients often benefit from a step-by-step approach tailored to their specific condition. This not only ensures a safer recovery but also promotes long-term well-being.

Thus, experts suggest returning to one’s normal exercise regime, albeit slowly and modifying painful exercises. “There are many great rehab professionals who can provide guidance and help you on your road to recovery. Besides, they may have specific techniques and treatments that will not only help in reducing your pain but also assist you throughout your journey,” articulated Dr Sunil Kumar Choudhary, senior consultant and head, orthopaedics, Asian Hospital Faridabad.

He noted that the decision to go for an enhanced recovery approach lies with the patient. “And even when you fix to go for it, you may need advice and guidance. However, it is in your best interest to return to your normal activities as early as possible while still trying to modify your recovery process to suit your needs. This may also involve a lot of trial and error till the time you reach your goal.”

“All you need to remember is you are much more capable of getting there despite what people around you or medical professionals may tell you. So, take your time and decide what works best for you,” mentioned Dr Choudhary.

Dr Aashish Chaudhry, managing director, senior consultant, and head, orthopaedics and joint replacement, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi too agreed and shared that the new way approach to injury recovery aligns with modern principles of rehabilitation and patient-centred care. “In my practice, I’ve witnessed the positive impact of patients actively engaging in their recovery process. Encouraging patients to take an active approach, with appropriate guidance, fosters a sense of responsibility and empowerment, which can significantly contribute to successful outcomes,” said Dr Chaudhry.

In the approach, rather than completely avoiding exercises that cause discomfort, patients are encouraged to work with healthcare professionals to find suitable modifications. “This allows for maintaining muscle strength, joint flexibility, and overall physical function during recovery,” said Chaudhry.

Having said that, experts urge that each patient’s journey is unique, and tailoring the approach to their specific needs is paramount. “As a physician, I stress the importance of seeking timely and appropriate medical attention, especially for complex or severe injuries. A healthcare provider can provide a precise diagnosis, develop a personalised treatment plan, monitor progress, and make necessary adjustments,” said Dr Chaudhry.
