In a candid episode of Karan Johar’s Koffee With Karan Season 7, Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone revealed the origins of their friendship. Their bond was forged at a Coldplay concert in Berlin during the IIFA awards.
The new mom shared, “It started at IIFA two years ago. We went to watch a Coldplay concert and that’s when we spent a considerable amount of time together, which was unplanned. That’s the night when we really connected.”
Bhatt shared that she discovered a different side to Padukone during that night: “That night was a revelation for me as I had always seen Deepika very poised and proper. She is mad, like a crackpot,” Alia exclaimed. She added, “We were entering the stadium and DP was like, ‘I want french fries.’ And I looked at her and thought, ‘Um, that body eating french fries. Chalo main bhi jati hun saath mein (Let me also tag along.) I will also eat french fries’.”
To this, Karan responded by saying that is the “perception” people have of Deepika, but “she’s not that girl. Deepika lives her life in slots. Like when she’s working, she’s working. When she’s not working, she can not want to leave a party. If she has nothing to do in the next 2-3 days, she’ll totally let loose. And when she is focusing, you won’t see her.”(sic)
The two actresses also shared a humorous anecdote about attending the men’s restroom together during the concert, highlighting their camaraderie and shared experiences.
“At one point, there was one not-so-popular song and both of us were dying to pee. So, we’ve escaped. We went to the men’s loo to pee. It was packed! The women’s, there was a long queue and outside the men’s, there was no queue, and she and I just looked at each other. And then we like pushed, there were 5 men, we pushed them. Went into the men’s loo, got in together, finished, came out,” said Deepika, calling Alia her “partner-in-crime.”
Deepika added that she feels a “lot of comfort” with Alia, saying, “I’ve mentioned this to her as well. I’m extremely fond of her sister. I just think both of them are so well brought up and yet young and fun and all of that. But still ambitious and they’re beautiful together.”
Talking about her bond with Deepika, Alia added, “Though I have spent more time with Katrina since we used to go to the gym, Deepika and I have always been very warm. There is a sense of comfort. If I sit down with DP for a night, I will share things about my life and I will be ok. We do not talk every day, we are not friends in that sense, but whenever we hang out together, we have a comfort level.”
Multiple studies spanning three decades have consistently shown that workplace friendships, like Deepika and Alia’s, can significantly enhance productivity and morale.
In an earlier conversation with indianexpress.com, Srishti Vatsa, Counselling Psychologist, also highlighted the challenges of maintaining strong friendships in adulthood. This can be helped by becoming better friends with your coworkers, like Deepika and Alia, considering we spend so much time with them.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Minnesota revealed the significant impact of close friendships on workplace productivity. Friendships foster greater commitment, improved communication, and mutual encouragement, leading to increased job satisfaction and overall success.
Findings from the International Social Survey Program (ISSP) further support this notion, demonstrating that interpersonal relationships are a key driver of job satisfaction. Among twelve domains of workplace quality, relationships were found to have the strongest positive effect on employee satisfaction.
