Loved the movie ‘Mamma Mia’? Get ready to watch its world-famous musical in India in November

For the unversed, the musical is one of the longest running shows at London's West End theatre, which along with New York's Broadway theatre is considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world.

The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre is bringing the world-famous musical Mamma Mia! to India in November.

Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, the musical is based on songs recorded by Swedish band ABBA. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper ‘Mamma Mia’.

The heart-warming story tells a tale of love and friendship, set on an idyllic Greek island, and unfolds to the timeless hits of legendary Swedish band ABBA, including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Super Trouper’, ‘Honey, Honey’, ‘Voulez-Vous’, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ and many more.

A film adaptation starring famous names like Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Cher was released in 2008. The movie became the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release, according to the NMACC website.

It also stated the musical has been seen by over 65 million people worldwide in 50 productions in 16 languages. Hailed as the sunniest of all musicals, it has premiered in 450+ major cities worldwide.

For the unversed, the musical is one of the longest running shows at London’s West End theatre, which along with New York’s Broadway theatre is considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world.

The musical will be shown at The Grand Theatre at NMACC starting November 29, 2023. The duration of the show is 2 hourse 25 minutes, which includes a 20-minute intermission.

According to the NMACC website, the show timings are 2 PM, 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM. The musical is open to kids above age 7, and the venue has been noted as wheelchair friendly.

You can book the tickets using Book My Show or on the NMACC website. The lowest priced ticket on the upper balcony is at INR 1,200; while the highest-priced tickets in the diamond box range from INR 21,250 to INR 32,500.

For those who might have sensory issues, it is important to note that this production uses theatrical haze, flashing lights and fog.

Previously, NMACC also brought the award-winning Broadway musical The Sound of Music to India. Currently, it has the Inifinity Room by iconic Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama on display, along with the Run As Slow As You Can exhibit from the Toilet Paper magazine.
