Glorious era has come to end, says Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Raza’s demise

In a series of tweets, Chouhan expressed grief over Raza's demise.

Describing internationally-acclaimed artist S H Raza as a “pride of Madhya Pradesh”, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said with his demise a glorious era has come to an end.

Raza (94), who popularised Indian concepts and iconography and built a towering legacy of modern art, passed away in Delhi today after a prolonged illness.

In a series of tweets, Chouhan expressed grief over Raza’s demise.

“With the sad demise of legendary painter Padma Shri SH Raza, a glorious era has come to end. An irreparable loss to fraternity of artists,” Chouhan tweeted.

“Raza was great pride of MP. He will always remain alive in our hearts & continue to inspire budding artists all over the world,” he said.

“Through internationally acclaimed art, Raza spread fragrance of our culture in every part of globe. May the soul rest in peace,” he said in another tweet.


Raza was suffering from old-age related ailments and was in the ICU of a private hospital for the last two months. The last rites will be conducted at his birth place in Mandala in Madhya Pradesh, according to his wishes.

Artist Saiyed Haider Raza was honoured with the highest french award- The Legion of Honour in 2015. He was also received Padma Vibhushan in 2013 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.

His work was recognised with the introduction of ‘Bindu’ released in 1980, which is a closer look at the Indian culture. It gave an Indian vision all his work and a deeper aspect of art.

Later in 2000, his work took a deeper insight on Indian spirituality and created works around  Mahabharat.
