From legendary English guitarist John Mclaughlin, trance act Infected Mushroom and Indian guitar demigod Amyt Datta to sitar player Anoushka Shankar and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain — blueFROG at Todi Mill compound in Lower Parel played host to an array of interesting and important artistes. The moment the space croaked for the first time in Mumbai, less than a decade ago, it made the heart get all jumpy with its fantastic acoustics and great ambience, becoming the one-stop shop for the music-starved. Now, months after its Delhi counterpart in Mehrauli folded, the Mumbai music space brought down its shutters on Sunday.
“After nine strong years of putting the best of music and live content on a fantastic stage in a club, we feel that this is the right time for the Frog to test other waters and venture out into other locations in newer, more innovating avatars. It is important for every brand to re-invent, grow and expand to not just survive but stay ahead of the curve,” says Sumer Vaswani, Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of blueFROG Media Private Limited, who reveals that there will be two new venues in different parts of Mumbai.
The curtain call to blueFROG, Mumbai, was made with “Frog Fest”, which had popular Indian rock band Indus Creed, UK Bass Dj Nuphlo, Afro-World band Tritonik from Mauritius, Datta and Zero perform at the tribute gigs over the weekend.
Vaswani spoke of acquiring and including other concepts beyond just a music venue. “We are definitely moving towards more exciting adventures, new venues, pop-ups, hopefully a festival on the cards. There will still be the signature music, sound and acoustics blueFROG is so well-known for. But we will definitely look at the changing innovations in design, F&B and club design and acoustics to ensure we are ahead of the curve,” he says.
