‘Apni aukaat mein rahoon isliye sabse chhota rakha hai’: Nawazuddin Siddiqui takes us inside his Mumbai home

"Mujhe design ka bada shauk hai… bar bhi khud design kiya hai. Khulepan ke liye maine badi badi windows banwayi hain," Nawazuddin revealed. Greenery surrounds his home, transporting you away from the chaos of Mumbai.

You wouldn’t guess it’s a celebrity’s home. But that’s the charm of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s house. It’s a place that hugs you with its familiarity.

“Ghar ka matlab yahi hai ki jahan aake lage ki ab kahin nahi jaana hai…comfortable feel ho.” That’s Nawaz’s idea of a home, he tells Pinkvilla on a tour of his house.

Step into his hall and you’re immediately drawn to the rich theatre history lining the walls. “Is ghar mein jo sabse acchi cheez mujhe lagti hai, woh hain yeh posters. Yeh ‘Hamlet’, ‘Othello’, ‘Merchant of Venice’—Shakespeare ke plays hain… aur yeh ‘Tughlaq’ play Purana Qila mein hua tha.” These posters are reminders of his theatre days.

A large corridor, lined with playbill-style posters, reminds Nawaz of his NSD (National School of Drama) days. “Mujhe lagta hai ki main abhi bhi student hoon acting ka,” he confesses.

His love for aesthetics is evident. “Mujhe design ka bada shauk hai… bar bhi khud design kiya hai. Khulepan ke liye maine badi badi windows banwayi hain.” Greenery surrounds the home, transporting you away from the chaos of Mumbai.

Film buffs would love his private screening space. “Yahan baith kar hum films dekhte hain, discussion karte hain. Balcony bahut pyari si hai, chaaron taraf hariyali hai… baahar baith kar baatein karne ka maza hi kuch aur hai.”

There’s also a home gym, compact yet complete. “Chhota sa hai, lekin sari machines hain. Do log ek saath gym kar sakte hain.”

His bedroom? The smallest room in the house, deliberately so. “Apni aukaat mein rahoon isliye sabse chhota rakha hai,” he says with a grin. And the name of the house? “Namam,” a tribute to his father.

The actor has preserved an unfiltered sense of joy, comfort, and camaraderie within his walls. “Doston ke saath gapshap, khana banana, films ki baatein karna—woh sabse accha time hota hai. Acting ke baare mein baatein karte karte pata bhi nahi chalta kab dinner ka time ho gaya.”

Even his kitchen is a labour of love. “Theme white rakha hai. Bahadur itna kamaal ka kaam karta hai, saaf safai mein bemisaal. Aur haan, main daal, aloo-gobhi aur baingan ka bharta bhi badiya banata hoon.”

In the end, Nawazuddin sums up the spirit of his space perfectly: “Sach kahoon, ghar, gaadiyaan—yeh sab koi achievement nahi hai. Achievement tab hai jab aap apne jaisa kaam karna chahein aur kar paayein.”
