Over 3 lakh vacancies are generated every year for teachers in schools across India caused due to retirements and new posts being open. Over 90 lakh school teachers are currently employed in India, informed the HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. However, every year over 10 lakh candidates appear for the Teacher Eligibility Tests (TET) conducted by both center and state governments. Thus, hinting at a need for more vacancies.
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) chairperson Satbir Bedi said that bridging this gap was one of the biggest problems the teacher training institute is facing. “Though we have over 3 lakh vacancies every year, the number of students clearing teacher eligibility and ready to take up a teaching job is around 10-13 lakh annually. Bridging this gap is one of our key concerns.”

She informed that the NCTE is working to create a degree course B.Ed Counselling to create better employment avenues. “India needs more counsellor. It is mandatory for every school to have counsellors and we can train students to take up these jobs. The candidates will be able to understand student psychology and guide them properly, after completing the course,” said Bedi.
The HRD has also given a nod to integrated BEd programmes including BSc-BEd, BCom-BEd among others to create specialised teachers. These courses will be available from next year.
The HRD Minister also announced several changes to be implemented in the curriculum and assessment of candidates aspiring to be teachers. “We have our students aspiring for new-age courses but the curriculum for creating teachers is still old. Under the new education policy (NEP), the government we have created a new committee which will quality teachers. Experts from across the domain have been part of the curriculum committee,” said Pokhriyal.
The HRD minister said that with the new curriculum India will not only produce teachers for the nation but have such quality teachers that the world would demand to have India teachers to educate their students. He said, “India has always been the vishwaguru (world’s teacher) in all the domains and the new curriculum will ensure that there is a global demand for Indian teachers.” Additionally, the NCTE is planning to set up BEd colleges in foreign countries on lines of CBSE which already has several schools abroad.

He informed that the government has also created a training programme which will train all the 90 lakh teachers employed and new joiners too. “Each teacher would undergo at least one training workshop in a year,” the HRD minister mentioned.
“Around 90 lakh teachers are currently employed in schools across India, we will train each one of them. The SCERT and NCTE will work together and train teachers in every district and cover even the remote areas. We aim to train over 90,000 teachers per year and the number will keep on increasing,” he said.

The HRD also informed that the assessment framework of teachers will also under go change under the NEP. The assessment of teachers under the NEP will also include demonstrations along with the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
The candidates need to secure at least 60 per cent marks to qualify in the Teacher Eligibility Test, mentioned the HRD minister, adding that the government is also working on updating the curriculum of TET.
“Since we will be giving the responsibility of our next generation in the hands of teachers, it is important that they are well-trained,” Nishank said while innaugrating new building for the NCET whch has been created at the cost of Rs 38 crore. The buiding set-up in Dwarka, New Delhi will host all four regional offices and headquarter of NCET.
At the event, the HRD Minister also innaugrated an online portal for students to obtain ‘recognised institution certificates’ after completing their BEd and DElEd programmes. Candidates will have to fill in their informationa and they will get their certificate within 3-5 working days, as informed by the NCTE chairperson.
