No work from home for government employees: Jitendra Singh tells Lok Sabha

All government employees will be urged to attend office physically, and not work from home, Jitendra Singh told the Lok Sabha. The Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has said that permitting work from home for employees of the Central government is not feasible and employees are required to attend office physically.

The minister of state was answering a question raised by BJP MP Ranjanben Dhananjay Bhatt and NCP MP Shriniwas Dadasaheb Patil in Lok Sabha.

Acknowledging that work from home was a possibility in the Covid years, he clarified that it could not become the new normal. “Given the nature of work and its functional requirements, remote working is not feasible for majority of roles in the Government. However, the Government did permit Work from Home as an exception to middle/junior employees during Covid-19 pandemic to enforce social distancing at workplace. As the pandemic restrictions eased off the employees are required to attend the office physically,” Singh said.

The minister was also asked whether the Government has conducted any work study about the feasibility of such a move, however the question was not particularly addressed by Singh.
