Data science was the top skill acquired by Indian learners in 2022, followed by software engineering and management, Great Learning’s upskilling trends report reveals. More than 75 per cent of professionals globally consider upskilling essential to future-proof their careers, the report claims.

In 2022, IT/ITES and BFSI were the top sectors where professionals upskilled, followed by manufacturing, educational services and pharma.

Notably, 24 per cent of Indians pursued upskilling for personal interest, a trend commonly seen in mature markets like the US. Meanwhile, 42 per cent of professionals in India upskilled to secure a new job, while 25 per cent aimed to achieve career growth within their current organisation.

The report also states that the major motivation for professionals with 0-8 years of work experience to upskill was to secure a new job, while those with 8+ years of experience aimed to achieve career growth within their current organisation.

Upskilling helped 43 per cent of professionals gain career growth in their own organisation, while 23 per cent were able to switch to a different domain and 18 per cent were able to secure a new job.

Trends in the report also reflect a shift in the way people view their careers, as they are becoming more proactive in shaping their own paths and taking control of their futures. The desire to upskill among Indians has increased by 4 points from the previous year. In 2022, 79 per cent of professionals were planning to upskill. In 2023, that number has risen to 83 per cent.
