The 8 ex-Navy men handed death sentence in Qatar

They were all employees of Doha-based Dahra Global and were taken into custody in August 2022

In a setback to India’s efforts at securing their release, eight former personnel of the Indian Navy, arrested in an alleged case of espionage, were handed the death sentence by a court in Qatar Thursday. The eight are identified as:

Captain Navtej Gill (retd)

Son of a retired Army officer, the ex-naval officer from Chandigarh served at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He was a navigating officer on INS Viraat, considered a prized posting, and also commanded INS Prabal, an advanced missile corvette and the lead ship of the ‘Killer squadron’. As a cadet, he had won the President’s gold medal.

Captain Saurabh Vasisht (retd)

An engineering officer, he received commendation from the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) twice. He undertook courses at DSSC Wellington as well as College of Defence Management, Secunderabad. He was command refit officer at southern naval command and served on INS Magar, INS Kulish, INS Khanjar and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sangram. He is originally from Dehradun.

Captain BK Verma (retd)

He was a navigation specialist and had served in a Godavari class ship. He was also a topper in the staff college course. Both he and his wife have a military background.

Commander Sugunakar Pakala (retd)

A decorated engineering officer, he received a commendation from the C-in-C. After his retirement, he joined Hindustan Shipyard Limited. An alumnus of Sainik school, Korukonda, he holds the record of crossing the equator twice on INS Tarangini.

Commander Purnendu Tiwari (retd)

A navigation specialist from the Navy’s executive branch, he commanded INS Magar and was the fleet navigating officer of the eastern fleet. He also served on Rajput class destroyers. Before moving to Qatar, where he was involved in the training of Qatari naval personnel, he trained Singapore’s naval personnel. He was the first from among the Armed Forces personnel to have got the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award four years ago.

Commander Amit Nagpal (retd)

The ex-officer was a communications specialist in the Navy.

Commander SK Gupta (retd)

The ex-naval officer specialised in Gunnery.

Ragesh

He was a sailor in the Navy.
