Wayanad Landslide Live: IMD chief says regular rainfall warnings were issued for Kerala

IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra Thursday said the India Meteorological Department issued regular forecasts for significant rainfall activity along the west coast of India and a red alert for Kerala in the early morning of July 30, the day Wayanad district was hit by landslides that killed more than 150 people.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the Kerala government did not heed the Centre's warning regarding a possible natural calamity in Wayanad due to heavy rains.

Responding to Shah's claim, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Wednesday that the IMD had only issued an orange alert in the district ahead of the landslides. However, he said that the district received over 572 mm of rainfall, which was significantly higher than what was predicted by the IMD.

During an online press conference, the IMD chief said the weather department had issued an extended range forecast for significant rainfall activity along the west coast of India on July 18 and July 25. The IMD chief said that an orange warning means "be prepared for action and one should not wait for red warnings." Similarly, warnings were in place for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, he said. Wayanad Landslides Live: ‘There is not a soul left’: At landslide Ground Zero in Wayanad, massive rescue ops on

CLOSE TO 48 hours into the devastating landslide that tore through the hills of Wayanad district early Tuesday morning, Mundakkai, Ground Zero of the tragedy, is a ghost village — many of its inhabitants are dead, others remain missing and those who survived were taken out after an arduous rescue mission.

According to the state government’s control room that’s monitoring the rescue operation, by Wednesday evening, the death toll from the landslides stood at 174 while around 170 people were reported missing as central and state agencies worked alongside local volunteers to carry out search, rescue and relief operations. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said 1,592 people have been rescued since the landslides hit.

But it’s Mundakkai, a village in the lap of the Western Ghats that posed the biggest challenge to the rescuers. Once dotted with resorts, homestays and coffee plantations, the entire village, part of the Meppadi panchayat, had been turned inside out as the torrent of mud and water washed away everything in its path — hundreds of houses, a mosque, a post office, a resort and several buildings. Wayanad Landslides Live: 'Two villages have disappeared off the map...we can't sit here today when lives might still be saved' says Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said "We have to be focusing on the hope of rescuing some people still because the truth is that 200 lives have been lost but there are still 200 people missing. Two villages have disappeared off the map, it is a very serious crisis. So, we must appreciate the value of trying to do this on a priority basis and see who you can save. Then, you can look at the politics as you know that the Home Minister said that was a warning but the CM said that the warning was not sufficiently serious, it was a green or orange alert and not a red alert. All of these can be debated later. Eventually, accountability is required and preventive measures are required but we can't sit here today when lives might still be saved and worry about the politics."
