The United States Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on Wednesday removed three prominent Indian entities from its restrictive list, aiming to bolster bilateral ties and advance energy cooperation.
The entities removed from the US Entity List include Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC); Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre (IGCAR) and Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) — all government-run institutions.
“The removal of the three Indian entities will enable closer cooperation between the United States and India to secure more resilient critical minerals and clean energy supply chains,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration Matthew Borman as per a release by BIS.
“This action aligns with and supports the overall ambition and strategic direction of the US-India partnership,” he added.
According to the statement, this decision will “support US foreign policy objectives by reducing barriers to advanced energy cooperation, including joint research and development and science and technology cooperation, towards shared energy security needs and goals.”
Indian Rare Earths, IGCAR, and BARC play pivotal roles in India’s scientific and technological landscape, particularly in the fields of nuclear energy and rare earth materials development.
The announcement follows US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan recent visit to New Delhi, where he announced that Washington is finalizing steps to remove long-standing regulations that have prevented civil nuclear cooperation between India’s leading nuclear entities and US companies.
