A 50-year-old Dalit man, brought to the Mithauli police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur-Kheri district for questioning in a murder case, died on Friday night. While the police said he complained of stomach ache and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, his family members have alleged that he was severely beaten and given electric shocks.
Although the police have refuted the claims, the family members of the man, identified as Asaram, and residents of his village, protested with his body and blocked the Lakhimpur-Maigalganj highway on Saturday morning.
Senior police officers swiftly responded and spoke to the protestors. “Although the protestors have cleared the highway, they are still on the roadside, expressing their discontent. We are actively engaging with them to address their concerns and are trying to resolve the situation,” stated Kheri Circle Officer Shamsher Bahadur Singh.
According to the police, on April 3, the body of a five-year-old girl, who went missing from near her house in the Pakaria Jalalpur village under the Mithauli police station was found barely 150 metre away from her home.
The girl was a neighbour of Asaram, a farmer. The postmortem report of the girl stated that the death occurred due to strangulation.
The girl’s family members lodged a complaint with the police and subsequently, an FIR was lodged at the Mithauli police station. “The police were informed about the suspected role of Asaram in the murder. He was subsequently called to the police station for questioning,” said a police officer.
“Asaram arrived at the police station on Friday and some time after, he complained of severe stomach pain. He was immediately transferred to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the officer added.
