After a 28-year-old police constable was allegedly hacked to death by her brother in a suspected honour killing in Telangana, her husband remembered their time as classmates in school, saying that they had been in love for many years but that her family had been against their relationship.
On Monday morning, S Nagamani, who was posted at Hayathnagar police station in Hyderabad, was hacked to death near Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district while she was on her way to work. According to police, her husband Srikant had called her at that time and she told him over the phone that she was being attacked by her brother Paramesh.
“Her family was against our relationship as I belong to a different caste. They got her married to another person against her choice 10 years ago and she was sent away. She got divorced a couple of years ago and was living in a hostel when we got in touch again,” said Srikant, a Telangana Agriculture Department employee.
Srikant said that after he married Nagamani, the couple approached the police over alleged threats from her brother. “Her brother was also angry because she was seeking a share in the family’s property… He had been telling people in the village that he would kill her, that is why we approached the local police,” he alleged.
In his complaint filed at Ibrahimpatnam police station, Srikant said he and Nagamani got married in November despite opposition from her family. “Despite their disapproval, we got married at Yadagirigutta. On November 30, as we had a day off, we visited our village. On December 2, at around 8.20 am, I left for duty and spoke to my wife Nagamani over the phone while on my way. During the call, she told me that her younger brother, Kongara Paramesh, was trying to hit her with his car. Suddenly, the call was disconnected,” he claimed in the complaint.
“I informed my brother Srinu, who rushed to the location and later called me back to inform me that Nagamani was lying dead on the road… Paramesh had been threatening her ever since we got married,” the complaint alleges.
Circle Inspector B Satyanarayana said, “Their case is known to police as her brother and family were given counselling by police officials to not harass the couple. We were not aware of the property dispute. Her brother Parmesh was very upset that she married a man from a lower caste and had threatened to kill her several times.”
Nagamani’s senior at Hayatnagar police station, SHO Nagaraju Goud, said she worked in the computer section at the station. “She was a polite and decent person. We were not fully aware that she faced such a serious threat to her life,” he said.
