Water from the Sutlej entered the Punjab Police Training Academy in Phillaur after the ‘Dhussi Bandh’ (a temporary embankment along the river) got breached Monday. Following this, several dozen vehicles got submerged under nearly five-feet water. Jawans have been deployed to pull out the vehicles.
The Sutlej is expected to receive approximately 2.50 lakh cusecs of water Monday, which might worsen the flood situation in the area. Around 1.50 lakh cusecs of water have been released from Ropar headworks and several local nullahs and rivulets will also carry water to the river.
According to the drainage department, the river can carry only 70,000 to 80,000 cusecs of water.
Notably, the main cause of the floods in Jalandhar in 2019 was the substantial release of water from Ropar headworks.
In view of the flood situation, residents of some villages in Jalandhar district have already been shifted to relief camps, said official sources. Residents of remaining villages along the banks of the Sutlej have also been put on high alert.
Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar Vishesh Sarangal said that all precautionary measures have been taken and the situation is being closely watched.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rain warning for Monday for Chandigarh, Patiala, Mohali, Ambala, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, and Yamuna Nagar. Moderate rain is also expected in Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Chaggar, Mahendragarh, Mewat, Palwal, Panipat, and Rewari.
According to the IMD, Chandigarh received 420.1 mm of rain in the last 48 hours, exceeding the required 278.5 mm for the entire month of July. More rain on Monday will further worsen the already dire conditions in Chandigarh and its surroundings, observed officials.
Meanwhile, Punjab received 149.3 mm of rain in the past four days against the total requirement of 169.4 mm of rain for the month of July.
