The Border Security Force (BSF) shot at a man who allegedly crossed the international border in North Tripura district to go to Bangladesh on Monday, sources said, adding that he sustained injuries in the incident.

The man, identified as Akash Das, 25, has relatives at Panisagar in North Tripura district and was allegedly trying to scale the border fence when BSF jawans intercepted him and tried to stop him.

A source in the BSF, who did not want to be named, said the jawans fired non-lethal, pump-action guns after Das declined to obey their order. “This person is a Bangladeshi national. He has relatives on the Indian side. He crossed the international border and entered India five years ago, as per our reports. His father has passed away since they came here. We still don’t have any information about the whereabouts of his mother. He was trying to cross the border and get into Bangladesh when our personnel tried to stop him…,” the BSF source said.

The BSF source added that the bullet hit Das in the abdomen and he sustained injuries, after which the jawans took him to a local hospital. A medical officer on duty at the hospital told reporters that Das was given preliminary treatment. He was later transferred to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital at Agartala in the evening.

Avinash Rai, Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, told indianexpress.com, “He was trying to cross the boundary wire. We’re still waiting for documents to confirm his nationality. A case will be registered after we get a complaint from the BSF. They will be filing it soon.”

Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh, comprising land-based and riverine parts. Much of the border is secured with a barbed-wire fence, except for a few patches that are still unfenced owing to local disputes.
