The Army has lost communication with two soldiers, who were on a combing operation in south Kashmir. A search operation has been launched to trace them.

Sources said the two are part of the Army’s elite para unit and went missing from south Kashmir on Tuesday night.

They said that the paratroopers were part of a combing operation in the Gadool forests of Kokernag in Anantnag district. “It is a dense forest with deep gorges and steep slopes,” said a source.

They also said the area saw substantial snowfall on Monday evening.

The Gadool forests have reported the presence of militants in the past. In 2023, Army Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Donchak and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Humayun Muzamil were killed in a gunfight in the same forests.

Police sources say that militants of Jaish and Lashkar had also set up a base in these forests earlier. However, the circumstances under which the two went missing are not clear so far.

Sources said that large contingents of the Army have been deployed in the area and are combing “every inch” of the forest.
