Reacting to the recent allegations of ally Tipra Motha, and the Opposition CPI(M) and Congress regarding lack of development among the tribal populace in the state, BJP Tripura president Rajib Bhattacharjee Sunday claimed that significant development work has been carried out in tribal-dominated areas since the saffron party came to power in 2018.

“The central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Tripura government led by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha prioritise the development of the tribal population. Accordingly, tribal-dominated areas were identified as aspirational blocks and districts; special packages and funding were also provided for them,” Bhattacharjee told reporters on the sidelines of the launch event of ‘Empowering Janajati, Empowering Tripura’ program at the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.

The program, which has been designed to disseminate information related to different government initiatives for tribals, is being viewed as significant ahead of the pending village committee polls of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Replying to a query on whether the BJP would contest the village committee elections in alliance with its coalition partners IPFT and TIPRA Motha, Bhattacharjee said that the party values its allies.

The polls to the 587 village committees in the TTAADC were supposed to be held on March 7, 2021, but had to be cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In July 2022, the High Court of Tripura issued an order “expecting” the State Election Commission to notify the dates of election at the earliest and complete the poll process including the declaration of results within the first week of November of the same year.

However, the ADC village committee polls are yet to be held. Last year, Tipra Motha held a statewide movement and submitted deputations at all block development offices on the issue.
