The Supreme Court has stayed an order of the Bombay High Court to reintroduce around 60 stray dogs in the same residential locality in Wadgaon-Sheri from where they were picked up and housed in shelters of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) more than two months ago.
In its order of May 15, a Supreme Court bench of Justice J K Maheshwari and Justice M M Sundaresh sought response from animal rights activist Vineeta Tandon on a petition filed by Brahma Suncity Cooperative Housing Society challenging the Bombay High Court order to release the dogs. The matter will be heard next on June 26.
On April 24, the Bombay High Court had directed the Pune police to assist the PMC in reintroducing the stray dogs. The PMC had detained the dogs at three pounds following an alleged incident of dog-bite in the society.
The matter reached the High Court through a petition filed by activist Tandon seeking the immediate release of the stray dogs. While the Supreme Court’s order was issued on May 15, the PMC had already released 25 of those dogs in the early hours of May 13 following the High Court directive. “All the dogs released were sterilised, vaccinated and dewormed,” Sarika Punde, civic veterinary officer, PMC, had said.
