Former Hizb militant gets five-year RI under Arms Act

A former Hizbul Mujahideen militant,in jail since in 1997,was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment under Arms Act.

A former Hizbul Mujahideen militant,in jail since in 1997,was on Wednesday sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment under Arms Act.

Principal Sessions Judge,Rajouri,Subash Chander Gupta sentenced Mohammad Jameel to five years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 2000 under Section 7/25 of Arms Act. He was also awarded three-year imprisonment along with fine of Rs 2000 under Section 3/25 of the Act.

Both the sentences shall run concurrently.

The judge observed that as the accused was incarcerated since May 1997 and would have “suffered trauma,pain and agony of protracted trial”,the court had taken a lenient view while sentencing him.
