Eight killed as SUV falls into Chenab river

Ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 10,000 for the injured has been granted.

Eight passengers were killed and another injured when a TATA Sumo skidded off the road and fell into river Chenab on Doda-Kishtwar road on Wednesday.

The ill-fated vehicle carrying ten people was on way to Thathri from Drabshalla at that time,sources said. While the injured has been airlifted to hospital at Jammu,one more passenger was still missing.

Some mechanical snag in the vehicle was stated to be the cause of accident,sources said,adding that it straightway fell into the river as there were no parapets constructed on the roadside.

The Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the death of people in road accident and conveyed their sympathies to bereaved families. The Chief Minister sanctioned ex-gratia relief of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 10,000 for the injured.

Meanwhile,the state governor reiterated his concern over the incidence of fatal accidents taking place in the state. He emphasized the police,transport department and other agencies concerned on pressing need for taking all required measures on immediate basis to reduce the incidence of such accidents in the state.
