Ratan Tata may have been known as a revolutionary businessman, but little has been spoken about his wit.
The Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and recipient of India’s second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, Ratan Tata passed away on Wednesday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.
In an old video interview, Tata was seen fact-checking the anchor who attributed a quote to him. The interviewer had asked him regarding a quote by him which read: “I don’t believe in making right decisions. I take decisions and then make them right.” To this, Tata jokingly says that he never made the statement but it has been circulated online quoting him.
In the video, Tata said, “I’m sorry. I am going to upset you. Facebook or Twitter made that statement. I never made the statement. It became a default statement. You know it when people read them back to you and there is no action that you can take with social media. So, you live with it. Some people think it is arrogant for you to have stated that and you don’t have a chance to defend by saying it. Some people think it’s a great statement to say and you quietly keep quiet.”
In 2008, he received the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour in India, after receiving the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honour in 2000. He joined Tata in 1961, where he worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. He later succeeded J R D Tata as chairman of Tata Sons upon the latter’s retirement in 1991. Under his tenure the Tata Group acquired Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus, in an attempt to turn Tata from a largely India-centric group into a global business.
