Protest rallies and demonstrations were organised today in various parts of Punjab by CITU against the dismissal of 500 workers by Maruti at its Manesar plant.

Chandigarh: Protest rallies and demonstrations were organised today in various parts of Punjab by CITU against the dismissal of 500 workers by Maruti at its Manesar plant. CITU Punjab General Secretary Ranghunath Singh accused the management of “vindictive” attitude towards workers. He also accused the management of indulging in unfair labour practices. It also held the Haryana government responsible for violent incident at the plant. CITU demanded that dismissal of 500 workers by Maruti be withdrawn. Protest rallies were held at Ludhiana,Sangrur,Barnala,Mansa,Ropar,Hoshiarpur,Gurdaspur,Bathinda,Nangal,Kotkapoora,Patiala,Fatehgarh Sahib and Chandigarh.

Woman killed in roof collapse

Batala: A woman was killed and her daughter-in-law injured when the roof of their house collapsed in Jauria village on Saturday. Kuldip Kaur and her daughter-in-law Sarabjit were pulled out from the debris by locals and rushed to a nearby hospital where Kuldip succumbed to her injuries,police said. Sarabjit is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital,they said.

Teenage girl raped by village youth

Hoshiarpur: A teenage girl here was allegedly raped by a youth of her village while she had gone out,police said on Saturday. The victim,a resident of Denowal Khurd village here,has lodged a complaint alleging that she was intercepted on the way by the youth named Major,who forcibly took her to a room and raped her,police said. A case has been registered against the youth under various sections of the IPC and hunt is on to nab the absconding accused,they said.

CPM to protest Food Security Bill

Chandigarh: Punjab CPI (M) will hold a state-wide dharna on September 12 to oppose the Food Security Bill. Charan Singh Virdi,Secretary,Punjab CPM,said that the party would demand 35 kg food grains for every family at the rate of Rs 2 per kg. “From August 25 to 31,we will conduct a signature campaign,and from September 1 to 7,we will stage dharnas outside godowns. We want people to know that food is being wasted in godowns. The government is exporting grains instead of using its own grain,” he said.

Haryana: All land records to be online

Chandigarh: In its effort to ensure transparency,the Haryana has fixed October 31 as the deadline for making all land records online in the state. Haryana Land Records Department has said that no manual nakal’ (copy) of record of rights will be issued from November 1.
