A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in the Rajya Sabha targeting the Congress, Congress whip Manickam Tagore, on Friday moved an adjournment motion and demanded that the PM issue an “immediate statement” on the “inhumane treatment” of Indians nationals in the US. “I rise to move an adjournment motion in the House to address a deeply concerning issue regarding the treatment of Indian nationals, particularly those deported from the United States, and to question the position of our Government on the same,” the notice read.
Protest over fishermen’s arrest Opposition MPs on Friday held a protest in the Parliament complex against Sri Lanka continuing to arrest Indian fishermen, and demanded that the government find a permanent solution to the issue. The protest was led by DMK, Congress and Left party MPs from Tamil Nadu and joined by parliamentarians from several other opposition parties, including Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Sudama Prasad of CPI(ML) Liberation. On deportation of Indians staying illegally in the United States, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram says, "America has got the sovereign authority to act as per their law against people who have entered their country without valid documentation but they must do it dignity. There is something known as universal human dignity and America must adhere to it and must respect it particularly when it involves citizens of a friendly nation. India has got good relationship with America."
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said the government is engaging with the US to ensure that deported Indians are not mistreated, underlining the focus should be on strong crackdown on the illegal migration industry.
The minister's statement in the Rajya Sabha came amid opposition protests over the treatment meted out to 104 Indians, who were deported from the United States.
"We are of course engaging the US government to ensure the returning deportees are not mistreated in any manner during the flight," Jaishankar said.
"At the same time the House will appreciate that our focus should be on strong crackdown on the illegal migration industry, while taking steps to ease visas for the legitimate travellers," he said. The minister stated that the process of deportation is not a new one.
"The standard operating procedure for deportation by aircraft provides for the use of restraints. However, we have been informed that women and children are not restrained," he said.
"Further need of deportees during transit related to food and other necessities, including possible medical emergencies, are attended to. During toilet breaks deportees are temporarily unrestrained if needed. This is applicable to chartered civilian aircraft as well as military aircraft," he said.
"There has been no change from past procedures for the flight undertaken by the US on Feb 5, 2025," he added.
A US military aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants landed in Amritsar on Wednesday, the first such batch of Indians deported by the Donald Trump administration as part of a crackdown against illegal immigrants.
The deportees claimed their hands and legs were cuffed throughout the journey and that they were unshackled only after landing in Amritsar. PTI
Responding to the Opposition's question that the deportees were sent in a military aircraft, EAM Jaishankar said it depends on the immigration customs authority in the US.
EAM Jaishankar responds saying, "Authorities have been given instructions to sit with every returnee and find out how they went to America, how they were taken."
"They were misled by agents and they have gone through harrowing experience," Jaishankar says.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the Centre is engaging with the US government to ensure that deportees are not ill-treated.
During the address in Rajya Sabha, veteran JD(S) MP H D Devegowda lauds the Centre over a woman from a backward community serving as the President of India. Devegowda mentioned about how he emerged as leader despite coming from a humble background. Devegowda said Congress had denied him ticket and added that his son contested with the support of NDA.

While discussion is going on in Rajya Sabha, Opposition MPs are protesting outside the Parliament over deportation of illegal Indian migrants from the US.
CPIM MP John Brittas told PTI, "It is condemnable that such an inhuman approach has been taken towards these deportees. The PM calls Trump ‘my dear Trump,’ yet he had a basic responsibility to ensure dignity for these people. Instead, they were handcuffed, brought in a military airplane, and deprived of even basic amenities during such a long journey."
Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala told PTI, “... They went to America after selling their everything and now have been returned like this. Don’t the PM and Foreign Minister have any responsibility? PM should ask his friend Trump...”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, "We are protesting the way in which this was done. They have every legal right to deport people who are illegally in their country and we, if they are proven to be Indians, have an obligation to receive them, but to send them like this abruptly in a military aircraft and in handcuffs is an insult to India, it's an insult to the dignity of Indians."
Meanwhile, outside the Parliament, Opposition MPs including Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav are holding a protest over the issue of deportation of alleged illegal Indian immigrants from the US.
In a video posted by ANI on X, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, SP MP Dharmendra Yadav, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and a few other leaders can be seen being handcuffed to mark their protest alleging that Indian citizens were subjected to inhuman treatment while being deported from the US.
Responding to Congress MPs Syed Naseer Hussain's query on students abroad post-conflict escalation, EAM S Jaishankar said, "Government carefully monitors the number of students in foreign countries...whenever there has been violence, we have taken measures..like in Ukraine."
In reply to Congress MP Fauzia Khan's question, Jaishankar said, "Yes, we take a number of measures, we allow students to be transferred to other countries...we have been empathetic..About 900 students were deported from Israel during the Hamas attack."
