Highlighting that he is being accused of putting people in jail, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said “if someone steals the country’s wealth then where should that person stay”.

Addressing the G20 University Connect finale, Modi said that his government has brought transparency by introducing reforms and “eliminating dalals (brokers)” from the system, which was  possible due to political stability, policy clarity and democratic values.

“There have been honest efforts to control corruption in the last nine years. Many of you, students… what was your age in 2014, 10 years ago, it must be around 10 years, 12 or 14 years. So, at that time, you would not have known what was the headline in the newspaper. How corruption had ruined the country,” Modi said, addressing a gathering that was attended by about 3,000 students, faculty members, and vice-chancellors of the participating universities, while a large number of students joined the event online.

“We have created a new technology-based system to prevent middlemen and leakages. A transparent system has been created by bringing many reforms and eliminating brokers from the system. Dishonest people are being punished and honesty is being respected,” he said

The Prime Minister said that if the youth of India are determined then nothing can stop India from becoming a developed and ‘atmanirbhar’ nation by 2047.

Modi spoke about schemes launched by the government to empower the SC, ST, OBC communities, and the poor and the middle-class, in the past 30 days.

During his speech, the PM also mentioned Rozgar Mela, in which, he said, more than 6-lakh youths have been given appointment letters since its inception.

Earlier, the PM distributed appointment letters to 51,000 youth via video conferencing.

Addressing the gathering, P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, said that the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration was unanimously adopted at the “incredibly successful” and “historic” G20 Summit on the 9th and 10th September 2023.

“Most importantly, the consensus is a testimony to our Prime Minister’s stature and India’s leadership on the global stage,” Mishra said.

Mishra said, “In terms of the organization as well, India’s Presidency has been unique with over 200 meetings spread over 60 cities across the country. It was the Prime Minister’s vision that the G20 should be a pan-India event and that events be held in every State and Union Territory.”

“The G20 was thus decentralized, democratized and taken to ever corner of the country. Each State left its unique cultural stamp on the minds of the delegates thereby giving the world an idea of India’s diversity. It has no parallel in any of the earlier G20 meetings,” he said.
