Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday called for “severe punishment” to those involved in the terror module linked to the Red Fort blast, saying that “no religion can justify the killing of innocents with such brutality”.
“These are only a few people who have always ruined peace and brotherhood here,” he said. “However, when we look at every resident of J&K and every Kashmiri Muslim with a single lens that each one of them is a terrorist, it is difficult to keep the people on the right track.”
Asked about white-collared professionals being involved in the module, Abdullah said, “What is new? Who says that educated people don’t get involved in such things? Have we not seen university professors before this?”
He reiterated that the “few people” involved should be given strict punishment, but “innocents should be kept out of it”.
“We can only help the central government to keep the situation normal, and we are working for it,” he added.
Earlier speaking at the special convocation of the University of Jammu, he said that J&K stands at the threshold of transformation, and that education is at the heart of this journey – empowering youth to become innovators, entrepreneurs, and nation builders.
He urged the youth to become agents of positive change in society and choose an occupation that gives them purpose, challenges their abilities, and enables them to lead a life that balances ambition with compassion. He said institutions like the University of Jammu continue to serve as “catalysts of progress”, not only by producing skilled graduates but also by inspiring responsible, compassionate, and resilient citizens.
“As we march ahead, let us ensure that the light of knowledge reaches every corner — from this campus, from the campuses of Kathua and Bhaderwah, to the remotest hamlets of Poonch, Rajouri, and Kishtwar,” the CM said.
Congratulating the recipients of medals and degrees, he asserted that success is not measured by what one achieves for themselves, but how they contribute towards society.
“I urge you to dream big, think boldly, serve selflessly, and contribute to building a nation marked by progress, harmony, and inclusivity,” he said.
