Bihar Political Crisis: A congratulatory call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on one hand, disapproval from the Opposition INDIA bloc on the other — JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar was at the centre of all political circles on Sunday as he snapped ties with RJD and Congress, resigning as the Chief Minister, only to form the government again with the BJP’s support.
“Things were not working out (with the INDIA bloc). I have resigned as the CM today and have asked the Governor to put an end to this government. Party leaders were giving me advice. I heard what they said and have resigned. The situation was not good. So, we have broken ties,” Nitish Kumar told reporters outside the Raj Bhavan.
Following the move, PM Modi congratulated Nitish, who will be taking oath again as the CM today, returning to the NDA fold. Reacting to the move, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde said that all BJP MLAs have unanimously passed the proposal to form the NDA government in Bihar with JD(U) and other. “This is for the welfare of the people in the state. Samrat Chaudhary has been elected as the Leader of the legislative party, Vijay Sinha elected as the Deputy Leader,” he added.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, meanwhile, said: “Tejashwi Yadav and Lalu Prasad Yadav had hinted regarding this and today it became true. Aise desh mein bahut saare log hein, aaya ram gaya ram (A lot of people come and go in this country).”
On Saturday, the Congress had admitted that Kharge had tried to contact Nitish twice or thrice but the two were unable to connect.
Jairam Ramesh, too, hit out at the Bihar CM, saying that he has changed colours like a chameleon, and that Mamata Banerjee and the Congress will fight jointly against the BJP and RSS.
Condemning the move, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said, “Nitish Kumar is sick. He has a a problem of forgetting. This is the truth. He gets attack sometimes. Now he has lost his memory again. Once he regains it, he will rejoin the INDIA bloc.”
He added: “There is Ram in Ayodhya and Paltu Ram is in Bihar. The BJP and Amit Shah himself had called him Paltu Ram when Nitish Kumar had joined hands with Lalu. Shah had also said that the BJP’s doors are closed for Nitish Kumar. What happened to that?”
The RJD (79), Congress (19), and three Left parties together (16) have 114 MLAs, eight short of a majority in House of 243. The JD(U)’s 45 MLAs and the BJP’s 78, along with the support of one Independent legislator, together make up 124 MLAs.
