More than three months after the death of Kanpur property dealer Manish Gupta during a police raid at a Gorakhpur hotel, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed a chargesheet against six policemen, including an inspector-rank officer, for murder among other charges.

The chargesheet, which has been submitted in a special court in Lucknow, listed various Indian Penal Code (IPC) charges against the accused policemen including causing hurt, criminal intimidation, tampering with evidence and frame-up by government officials.

The six accused, all in jail, are inspector Jagat Narayan Singh; sub-inspectors Akshay Kumar Mishra, Vijay Yadav and Rahul Dubey; head constable Kamlesh Singh Yadav; and constable Prashant Kumar. Jagat Narayan Singh was the station house officer of Ramgarh police station in Gorakhpur while others held different posts there.

Based on a police complaint filed by Manish Gupta’s wife, Meenakshi Gupta, an FIR was lodged against three police officers and an unidentified one.
