MGNREGA funds: TMC claims wrong, says Union minister

"They are claiming that the Centre did not release funds, which is wrong. The Modi government has released Rs 54,150 crores to Bengal, which is much higher than the Rs 14,985 crores that the UPA government had given," Union I&B Minister Anurag Thakur told media.

With the TMC protesting in the national capital against the Centre allegedly not releasing funds for central schemes to Bengal, the government and the ruling party hit out at the Mamata government and the TMC Monday.

“TMC leaders facing corruption charges and investigations have been sent to stage a protest in the national capital. They are claiming that the Centre did not release funds, which is wrong. The Modi government has released Rs 54,150 crores to Bengal, which is much higher than the Rs 14,985 crores that the UPA government had given,” Union I&B Minister Anurag Thakur told media.

BJP’s Bengal state president Sukanta Majumdar said that a central team had made field visits in 2019 and listed irregularities and the state government did not take any action.

Majumdar said that at Rs 30,000 crore, allocation to Bengal under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was six times what the state was allocated under the UPA.

Union Minister Subhash Sarkar said that the NREGA grant was stopped two years ago under Section 27 of the 2005 Act because of irregularities.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee said that while there was no TMC protest when women were stripped in panchayat polls, “TMC is now coming to Delhi to start a circus”. “We are willing to give money to the state, just like every state. Par hisaab to do (but produce accounts),” she said.
