A head constable with the Manipur Police died of a bullet injury in the state’s Kangpokpi district on Thursday evening, taking the day’s death toll to three.

Head Constable Lenglam Dimngel, who was posted at Leimakhong police station in Kangpokpi district, died after he was shot on his way to Haraothel village at around 5:30pm on Thursday, it is learnt.

Haraothel, a Kuki village in Kangpokpi, had seen heavy firing through the day in which two people from the Meitei community were killed, triggering unrest in Imphal on Thursday evening and the political drama around CM Biren Singh’s speculated resignation on Friday.

According to a police source, Dimgnel, along with another head constable were sent to Haraothel village on Thursday evening to gather some items.

“After the firing had ceased, he, along with a colleague, left for Haraothel to gather some items, such as Aadhar cards, which had been left behind after the morning’s incidents. On their way there, he was shot by a stray bullet from the eastern side which hit him on the neck. He died on the spot,” said the source.
