The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta Thursday conducted raids at multiple properties linked to retired Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer G P Mehra in Bhopal and Narmadapuram district, allegedly uncovering gold, cash, and assets worth several crores.
Officials said the searches followed a complaint that Mehra had amassed disproportionate assets during his service. After verification, a case was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The raids were carried out under the supervision of Lokayukta Director General Yogesh Deshmukh, based on complaints that Mehra had accumulated huge wealth through corrupt practices, Bhopal Lokayukta SP D. Rathore said.
The most striking recovery came from Mehra’s property in Saini village, where investigators allegedly found 17 tonnes of honey, six tractors, high-end farming tools, 32 under-construction and seven completed cottages, two fish farms, a temple, and multiple ponds and cowsheds spread over several acres.
“Acting on verified information, a case was registered against Mehra under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The raids were conducted after obtaining mandatory approval. As far as the honey is concerned, we are probing if he was in the business of selling it,” Rathore said.
The searches covered Mehra’s residences in Manipuram Colony and Opal Regency in Bhopal, his industrial unit KT Industries in Govindpura, and his farmhouse in Saini village of Sohagpur tehsil, Narmadapuram.
At his Manipuram Colony residence, officials claimed to have found Rs 8.79 lakh in cash, jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh, fixed deposits of Rs 56 lakh, and property documents. The Opal Regency flat allegedly yielded Rs 26 lakh in cash, 2.6 kg of gold valued at Rs 3.05 crore, 5.5 kg of silver, and additional property papers.
At KT Industries, which manufactures PVC pipes, the team allegedly recovered factory equipment, raw material, finished goods, and financial documents.
Four vehicles registered in the names of Mehra’s family members were also allegedly found. Officials said documents related to land, insurance policies, and investments would be scrutinised further.
A Lokayukta spokesperson said the value of the recovered assets is still being assessed and that further legal action will follow once verification is complete.
When asked about the allegations, Mehra declined to comment citing the ongoing investigation. However, he said: “I’ve been a farmer since I was a child. My sons are doing their own business”.
