What does the electorate look like? The Election Commission recently announced that as many as 96.88 crore registered voters will be exercising their franchise in the upcoming elections, of which, approximately 47.15 crore are women.
What does BJP’s list of candidates so far look like? The BJP on Wednesday had released its second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, dropping at least 28 sitting MPs while including three former Chief Ministers, nine Union Ministers, two Rajya Sabha MPs and 15 women. If the party’s first list of 195 candidates, released on March 2, was more about continuity with a large number of candidates being retained, the second list of 72 candidates signalled change and an emphasis on selection based on the winnability factor. With the second list, the BJP has announced all its candidates for Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Tripura and Uttarakhand.
What does the Congress’s list of candidates so far look like? The Congress, meanwhile, on Tuesday, came out with its second list of 43 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, fielding sitting MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Pradyut Bordoloi in Assam, and Nakul Nath from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, while denying renomination to its Barpeta, Assam, MP Abdul Khaleque. Having announced the candidatures of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, former Chhattisgarh Home Minister Tamradwaj Sahu and AICC general secretary (organisation) and Rajya Sabha MP K C Venugopal in the first list of candidates, the Congress central leadership had sent a signal that senior leaders will have to contest elections. But, sources said, this time, several senior leaders expressed their reluctance to enter the fray, facing the prospect of contesting from seats in the Hindi heartland, where the BJP continues to remain strong as the recent Assembly elections show.
What is the chatter around One Nation, One Election? As the first step to holding simultaneous elections in the country, the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind has recommended that the government take a “one-time transitory measure”, which would require the Union government to identify an “appointed date” immediately after a Lok Sabha election and all state assemblies that go to poll after the said date would have their terms expire with the Parliament. Then, as the second step, municipality and panchayat elections should be held within 100 days of the Lok Sabha and state elections.
According to sources, if the new government elected after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls accepts the Kovind committee’s recommendation and immediately initiates the process, the first simultaneous polls could be held as early as 2029. During this transition period, all states with elections due between June 2024 and May 2029 would see their terms expire alongside the 18th Lok Sabha. Consequently, some state assemblies would have terms of less than five years as a one-time measure to facilitate this synchronisation.
EC’s Lok Sabha poll schedule shows 544 seats instead of 543, here’s why
The Election Commission Saturday announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha polls, which will be held in seven phases starting April 19. Counting of votes will be taken up on June 4.
Although the election is to elect the 543-member Lok Sabha, the number of constituencies added up to 544 when Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar made the announcement.

In YSRCP list, Jagan Reddy drops 60% MPs to offset anti-incumbency; balances communities
Just before the Election Commission’s (EC’s) announcement Saturday of the the simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled for May 13, the ruling Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP declared its candidates for all 175 Assembly seats and 24 out of 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
The YSRCP announced the list of its candidates at the “samadhi” (grave) of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy at Idupulupaya in Kadapa district, in the presence of party supremo and CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
Jagan has dropped 14 of the 22 sitting YSRCP MPs or over 60% of the incumbent party MPs, bringing in fresh faces to counter anti-incumbency. Notable among those who have been dropped are sitting Vishakhapatnam MP MVV Satyanaryana, Gorantla Madhav from Hindupur, Chinta Anuradha from Amalapuram, Araku MP Godeti Madhavi, Maragani Bharat Ram from Rajamahendravaram, Talari Rangaiah from Anantapur, and Magunta Srinivasulu from Ongole.

‘Agni pariksha of democracy’, ‘last chance to save Constitution’: Oppn after EC announces LS poll dates
Soon after the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule, the Opposition parties, including the Congress, Saturday said that it was “perhaps the last chance to save democracy and the Constitution from dictatorship”.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the people of the country “will together fight against hatred, unemployment and price rise.”
“The 2024 Lok Sabha elections will open the ‘door of Nyay’ for India. This would be perhaps the last chance to save democracy and our Constitution from dictatorship. We the people of India’ will together fight against hatred, loot, unemployment, price rise and atrocities. ‘Haath Badlega Halaat’ (the Hand will change the situation),” Kharge said on X, referring to the Congress’s poll symbol.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati, in a statement, welcomed the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls schedule. However, she said it would have been better if the elections were held in three or four phases, instead of seven.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav said the Lok Sabha election will decide the future of the country. Yadav also called the upcoming elections an “agni pariksha” (test of fire) of the democracy.
Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the upcoming elections a “great festival of democracy.” He appealed to the public to vote against “dictatorship and hooliganism” this time.
Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Why has the process been pushed to June?
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections is only the second instance when voting and counting has extended into the peak summer month of June, a move necessitated by a combination of factors, sources in the Election Commission said.
The 1991 Lok Sabha elections were held in May-June, but that was because the Chandra Shekhar government was dissolved 16 months after it was sworn in.

How CEC Rajiv Kumar used poetry to rebut criticism of EVMs
“Adhoori hasrato ka iljam har bar hum par lagana thik nahi, wafa khud se nahi hoti, khata EVM ki kehte ho, aur baad mein jab parinam aata hai toh uspe qayam bhi nahi rehte."
The couplet, which CEC Rajiv Kumar said he thought of on Friday night, means it is not proper to blame the Election Commission for unfulfilled desires when one has not done his or her job properly.

In 2024 polls, Congress hopes for a repeat of 2004, stares at heartland challenge
Rahul Gandhi has walked the extra mile, while his party Congress has swallowed pride and joined a band of disparate Opposition parties to stop the Narendra Modi juggernaut and announced, perhaps for the first time, a raft of poll promises even before the election schedule was announced.
Despite these unprecedented political moves, the Congress is entering the Lok Sabha battlefield with just a flicker of hope of a repeat of the 2004 verdict.
Its grand plan to ensure that there is one Opposition candidate against the BJP in 400 plus Lok Sabha seats has not fully materialised — there will still be Opposition coalitions in several states — and the INDIA alliance has struggled to sustain its momentum after its much-hyped launch in Patna last year largely because of internal divisions and bickerings besides some high-profile exits.
