Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt today claimed that former Gujarat Minister of State for Home Gordhan Zadafia was aware of the violence unfolding in Naroda area and Gulburg society here during the 2002 pogram, contrary to what the leader had told the Nanavati Commission.
Zadafia, while deposing before the Nanavati Commission, which is probing the riots, had said that he was not aware of the incidents in Naroda and Gulburg society as they took place.
Bhatt has written a letter to the Commission stating that both Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Zadafia had been kept well-informed about the on-going violence in Ahmedabad.
Bhatt, who was the Deputy Commissioner in the State Intelligence Bureau in 2002,has also attached copies of messages sent by him to the Chief Minister’s office and the MoS (home) on the situation at Gulburg society on February 28,2002.
“Both the Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Zadafia were kept contemporaneously informed about decision of bringing dead bodies to Ahmedabad, and the likely repercussions of the said administrative decision; as well as the on-going violence at Gulburg Society and other places in Ahmedabad,” the letter says.
During his in-camera deposition on December 27,Zadafia also claimed as “incorrect” phone call details produced by IPS officer Rahul Sharma, which purportedly revealed the minister was aware of the unfolding violence.
Bhatt’s letter,written today,terms Zadafia’s claim as “false”.
“I had obtained relevant call records for Godhra as well as Ahmedabad. I have also had the occasion to compare records procured by SIB with the records collected by Rahul Sharma. I had found both the call records to be exactly similar,” Bhatt says.
Sharma, who was DCP (control room) during the riots, had collected phone call records from private telecom companies on CDs.
He later submitted copies of the CDs to Nanavati commission and U C Banerjee commission which probed Godhra train incident.
