Transporters in Jammu threaten to go on strike

Transporter unions who ply in Jammu and Kashmir,have threatened to go on strike if they are not provided with security in the valley.

In a move which may affect the supplies of petroleum products and other essentials across the state,various transporters unions in Jammu on Saturday threatened to go on strike from next week,if state government did not provide them security,especially in the Kashmir Valley.

Pointing out that a decision to go on strike was taken at a meeting of various associations of taxi,bus,truck,petrol tanker,matador and auto operators,general secretary of the Oil Tankers Assocaition,Ranjit Singh,at a press conference in Jammu said that they have not been provided security in Valley despite repeated assurances from government including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

“Our vehicles which go to Valley to deliver supplies are being damaged and drivers injured in attacks by anti-social elements,’’ he said,adding that nearly 250 vehicles have been damaged and 50 drivers injured so far during the two-month long violence in Valley.

The chairman of the Mini Bus Operators Union,Anil Chopra and president of the Jammu Taxi Operators Union,Devinder Choudhary,who were also  present on the occasion criticized government for not providing protection to the operators of commuter services and goods carriers plying in the state.

In this connection,they referred to the recent murder of a taxi driver Gurpreet Singh of Nanak Nagar by some unidentified people at Nagrota. Despite assurances from district administration,neither the accused in the case have been arrested nor any government job has been provided to the deceased’s brother,they pointed out.

Pointing out that all the participants at the meeting decided to go on strike if government did not fulfil their genuine demands including arrest the accused behind the murder of taxi driver and provide a job to deceased’s brother within a week’s time. Those present at the meeting included All J&K Transport Welfare Association,Mini Bus Workers,Taxi Operators Union Railway Station,Oil Tanskers Association,Bus Unions of Banihal,Kathua,R S Pura,Poonch,Chhamb routes,Matador Union Jammu,Auto Union and Truck Union.
