Interim bail of Mamata’s ‘attacker’ extended

In some relief for truck driver Gurjant Singh,arrested for an alleged attempt on the life of Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee,a local court today extended his interim bail and allowed him to leave for his native state Punjab.

While extending the interim bail period till November 30,Chief Judicial Magistrate of Tamluk sub-divisional court,Gopal Kumar Dalmia,said that can leave for his home state but ordered that he would have to leave behind his contact address with the investigating officer of the CID,which was examining the case.

Public Prosecutor Sheikh Rafikul Alam submitted that it should be examined whether the truck had any alternate braking system even as Gurjant’s counsel,Monojit Singh,appealed for regular bail on the strength of the Motor Vehicles report which had established that the brakes of 10-wheel multi-axle truck had failed as claimed by the accused.

Gurjant,who hails from Sangrur district in Punjab,was granted interim bail on two sureties of Rs 2,500 each on August 25,after the CID placed the case diary and the mechanical test report of the truck.

The judge had granted interim bail till September 8 and directed Gurjant to meet the investigating officer of the state CID once a week at the CID headquarters in Kolkata.

Gurjant’s truck had hit the escort car of Banerjee which in turn hit her car at Kolaghat when she was returning to Kolkata after addressing a rally at Maoist-dominated Lalgarh on August 9. Banerjee was flung against the dashboard and suffered injuries in the chest.
