The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has decided to field Supreme Court advocate Haris Beeran as its candidate in the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Kerala.

IUML Kerala president Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal on Monday announced Beeran’s name. “The decision was taken at the party high power committee,” he said.

Beeran has represented the IUML on various petitions in the Supreme Court including the one against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Elections for three Rajya Sabha seats in Kerala will be held on June 25. Going by the strength of the Kerala Assembly, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) can elect two members and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) one. The UDF had earlier decided to give the seat to the IUML.

The three Rajya Sabha members from Kerala who are retiring are Elamaram Kareem (CPI-M), Binoy Viswom (CPI), and Jose K Mani (Kerala Congress). Their term will end on July 1.
