Kerala Weather News: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam on ‘yellow’ alert as IMD flags rain, thunderstorm risk

A low-pressure area that formed on Sunday over the Southwest Bay of Bengal continues to move westward and fuels moisture that keeps the northeast monsoon active. The IMD says another low-pressure area may develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 22 and may intensify in the coming days.

Rain levels remain subdued across Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, south interior Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep, regions that normally benefit from the northeast monsoon season (October–December). As of November 16, Puducherry records a -24% deficit, Kerala -26% and Tamil Nadu -9%.

Probable impact due to heavy rainfall

• Poor visibility may cause traffic congestion
• Waterlogging and treefall may disrupt traffic and increase travel time.
• Uprooted trees may damage power infrastructure.
• May damage standing crops and vegetables close to maturity.
• Landslides, mudslides and landslips may occur.
• Lightning may injure people and cattle in open areas.
