The Jore Sahib, a pair of sacred footwear belonging to Guru Gobind Singh, the last of the 10 Sikh Gurus, and his wife Mata Sahib Kaur, will be kept at the Patna Sahib Gurudwara, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Saturday.
The footwear, measuring 11” by 3½” for the right foot of Guru Gobind Singh and 9” by 3” for the left foot of Mata Sahib Kaur, has been safeguarded by the Puri family for over three centuries. They are considered sacred relics in Sikhism.

An interstate yatra has been planned to take the holy footwear to Patna Sahib Gurudwara, located in the capital of poll-bound Bihar.
“The overwhelming opinion of the Sikh Sangat, which engaged in consultations, was that since Guru Maharaj Gobind Singh ji’s birthplace is Patna Sahib, the Gurudwara Management Committee there should be requested to take over their sewa (service towards them),” Puri said.
“They (the Delhi and Patna Gurudwara Parbandhak committees) will take charge from here and work out the modalities of the yatra — the route, the timing… This will be shared in the coming days…,” he said.
Last month, Puri and members of the Sikh Sangat had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a report recommending measures for safekeeping and befitting display of the sacred relics, which were under the custodianship of the Puri family for over 300 years and were placed at the residence of his late cousin, Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri, in Karol Bagh, Delhi.
“Holy relics as significant and spiritually important as the Jore Sahib are as much a part of the glorious Sikh history as they are of the cultural ethos of our nation,” the PM had said after receiving the report on September 19.

Puri said Anandpur Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa Panth, had also been suggested as an appropriate location for the holy relics, but more members of the community were in favour of Patna Sahib, the birthplace of the last Guru.
