Jiribam-Imphal railway line to connect Manipur’s capital with national rail network

Jiribam-Imphal railway line: Indian Railways (IR) is working in full swing for the completion of Jiribam–Imphal railway line, a prestigious project that will finally bring train connectivity to Imphal, the capital of Manipur. This rail project falls under the administrative control of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.

Train connectivity to Imphal

With the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang rail project, train services have recently begun from Aizawl (Sairang). Similarly, once the 110.625 km-long Jiribam–Imphal new line project is completed, Imphal will also be connected to the rail network.

During his visit to Manipur on September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Imphal will soon be connected to the national rail network. “Rail connectivity in Manipur has been expanding during our government’s tenure. The Jiribam–Imphal railway line will soon connect the capital city, Imphal, to the national rail network. The government is investing 22,000 crore rupees in this project,” PM Modi said, after laying foundation stone of various development works at Manipur’s Churachandpur.

Jiribam-Imphal railway project status

So far, Indian Railways has commissioned only a 55.36 km stretch of the Jiribam–Imphal new line project. Once completed, this railway line project will provide connectivity to Imphal, boost export potential for horticulture and agricultural products and promote tourism. This will further strengthen the regional economy.

In the Monsoon Session of Parliament, BJP Rajya Sabha member from Manipur, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba urged the government for the speedy completion of the Jiribam-Imphal railway line. In a special mention at the Upper House on August 20, Leishemba said: “The 55.36 km long Jiribam-Khongsang section has already been completed and commissioned in September 2022. However, the remaining portions of Khongsang- Noney (18.25 km) and Noney-Imphal (37.02 km) are yet to be completed.”

Jiribam-Imphal railway project update

The Jiribam-Imphal railway line involves construction of a total 45 tunnels. The tallest pier bridge is being developed across the valley of river Ijei near Noney with a pier height of 141 metres.
