Jharkhand Exit Poll 2024 LIVE Updates: As the second and the last phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections ended today, the pollsters predict a close fight between JMM-led INDIA and NDA alliance in Jharkhand. The focus is on the ruling JMM-led INDIA which is seeking to retain power, while the BJP-led NDA is hoping to oust the Soren government in the state. The second phase elections kicked off on Wednesday with 38 of the 81 seats going to polls. The first phase of polling took place in Jharkhand on November 13.
What happened in the 2019 election? The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance had clinched the 2019 Assembly elections and had formed the government under Hemant Soren. Of the 38 seats that voted on Wednesday, JMM had won in 13 in 2019. Allies Congress and CPI(ML)L had won eight and one seats, respectively. The BJP won 12 seats; its now ally All Jharkhand Students’ Union Party (AJSUP) won two, and the erstwhile Babulal Marandi-led Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM), which merged with the BJP in 2020, won another two seats.

Key contestants in the second phase of the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections include Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is pitted against Gamaliel Hembrom of the BJP in Barhait; AJSUP chief Sudesh Mahato is challenging former MLA Amit Mahato of JMM in Silli; CM’s wife Kalpana Soren is taking on Muniya Devi from BJP in Gandey; in Jamtara Shibu Soren’s daughter-in-law Sita Soren, who is a BJP candidate, is going against sitting MLA Irfan Ansari of Congress in Jama.
Speaking about the exit polls predictions, JMM leader Manoj Pandey said, "Exit polls are just exit polls...but the actual results that are going to come will be shocking. We will have 55+ seats...look at the excitement of people, look at the increase in voting percentage. BJP did not have a topic but we were moving forward with the issues of people..."
Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay said, "The areas where polling took place in the second phase of elections, JMM-INDIA alliance has always swept polls and BJP ever got even one seat... JMM's tally will only increase. not reduce. BJP could not raise even one issue during their campaign based on which they could claim to bring change...Hemant Soren will certainly become the CM again."
Reacting to exit polls surveys, Former Congress chief Rajesh Thakur said, "There is a difference between 'exit poll' and 'exact poll'...and from what we have seen in the last elections, there is no value of exit polls now. We believe in 'exact polls', not the exit polls... Whatever the decision would be on November 23, we will respect it..."
68 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 5 PM on Wednesday in 38 assembly constituencies in Jharkhand where voting in the second and final phase ended, officials said.
Polling began at 7 AM in 14,218 booths across 12 districts and continued till 5 PM.
The officials said polling in 31 booths ended at 4 PM though people standing in the queue at that time were allowed to exercise their franchise.
In Jharkhand, voters headed to the polls for the second phase of elections, covering the remaining 38 seats of the 81-seat assembly. The ruling JMM-led INDIA bloc is aiming to retain power, while the opposition BJP-headed NDA hopes to wrest control.
The exit polls will begin to air after 6 pm on November 20. While exit polls will offer initial insights into the likely winners, it’s important to note that these results are based on surveys conducted after voting ends, not the official outcome.
Seven politicians have become Chief Minister of Jharkhand since the state was carved out of Bihar in 2000, but only one — Raghubar Das — has had an unbroken five years in the position. No party has won a majority of its own in the five Assemblies elected in the state so far. The BJP and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have remained the dominant political players in the state.
