Water storage level in reservoirs in 12 states drops

States with a better storage than last year for the corresponding period were Punjab, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

The Central Water Commission on Friday said water storage level in the reservoirs in 12 states has gone down as compared to the corresponding period last year.

With drought looming over several parts of the country due to weak monsoon, the CWC in a statement said, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu were the
states having lesser water storage than last year as on July 3.

States with a better storage than last year for the corresponding period were Punjab, Orissa and Chhattisgarh. Rajasthan and Andhra
Pradesh have witnessed no change in the storage level.

Overall, the CWC has said, “Live storage available in 85 important reservoirs of the country as on July 3, 2014, was 36.873 BCM (billion cubic meters)  which is 24% of total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. This storage is 83% of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 112% of storage of average of last ten years. The present storage position during current year is better than storage position of last year and average storage of last ten years.”
