Stockholm Water Prize for ‘Water man’

Noted water activist Rajendra Singh was on Friday named the winner of the Stockholm Water Prize 2015, the fifth Indian to win the prestigious global award that is being given since 1991.

Rajendra Singh, who had won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2001, is well known for his community-based water conservation and water management efforts in Rajasthan.

“Rajendra Singh’s life work has been building social capacity to solve local water problems through participatory action, empowerment of women, linking indigenous know-how with modern scientific and technical approaches and upending traditional patterns of development, resource use and social norms,” says the citation of the award.

Singh, who is called ‘water man’, said it was the people he works with who taught him the science of conserving water and putting it to its best use.
