The Supreme Court Monday stayed for 10 days trial against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a disproportionate assets case pending in a Bangalore court .
A vacation bench of Justices B S Chauhan and A K Sikri, however, clarified that civil suit proceedings pending in the same court, will go on.]“We are keeping at abeyance trial in the criminal proceedings for 10 days. However, it is made clear that the civil proceedings will go on,” the bench said and fixed the petition for hearing on June 6.
The bench issued notice to Director General, Vigilance, on a petition by AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa.
Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for the petitioner, said there would be grave prejudice if criminal trial is not stayed.
The disproportionate assets case was shifted to Bangalore in 2003 following a Supreme Court directive on a petition alleging a fair trial was not possible in Chennai.
