The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday said it would recommend to the union Ministry of Defence that 24-year old Delhi nursing graduate and acid attack victim Preeti Rathi be allowed to take up her assignment as lieutenant with the Army Medical College in Colaba. Preeti was one of the 200 candidates selected by the AMC from about 15,000 applicants who had applied for the post.
Rathi,who was scheduled to join AMC,Colaba this week,was attacked by an unidentified man when she alighted from the Mumbai-bound Garib Rath at Bandra Terminus on Thursday morning. She suffered severe internal burns and has lost vision in her right eye.
The Commission will write a recommendation letter to the defence ministry and appeal that Preeti be allowed to retain her job, Nirmala Sawant Prabhawalkar,member,NCW,told The Indian Express. Prabhawalkar met Preeti Rathi Friday evening at Masani Hospital in Byculla.
Meri madad karo,mujhe job chahiye, Preeti wrote on a piece of paper for Prabhawalkar. She also sought punishment for the attacker who hurled acid on her. Preeti is unable to talk because a food pipe is inserted in her neck.
Prabhawalkar said,I will meet the Maharashtra governor and ask him to curb the abundant availability of acid for domestic use. She also plans to meet Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
Preetis 57-year-old father Amarsingh Rathi said,We have still not lost hope. He said Western Railway has agreed to pay the hospital bills for Preetis treatment.
