As political parties and people’s representatives failed to take up their cause, students of a government high school in Kerala launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding teachers at their school. Students called off their agitation, began on Tuesday, a day after the cabinet decided to appoint teachers.
Students of the government high school at Mamalakkandam in Ernakulam began the agitation as the government did not appoint any teacher for their high school, upgraded from an upper primary last year.
The students, with the help of the PTA, laid a siege to the district educational office at Kothamangalam on Tuesday morning. From afternoon, two students started an indefinite hunger strike, without the support of any student political outfit or political parties. They even refused to get shifted to hospital.

As the agitation without the support of student wing of political parties caught the attention of civil society, the cabinet on Wednesday considered the issue as an out of the agenda item. It decided to appoint four teachers for the high school, a demand which has been pending before the authorities for last two years.
PTA president Jaya Kumar said the 10th class had 24 students at the beginning of the academic year. Except nine students, others opted for schools elsewhere. Students from the tribal and the most economically backward families remained at the school as they had no other place to go.
“Two students insisted that they want to go for hunger strike until their school gets teachers. We tried to dissuade them, but the students insisted. They ended the hunger strike only after getting the order, allotting teachers for the school,’’ said the PTA president.
