J&K police rescues 400 people as flood situation remains grim

Earlier on Friday morning a bridge collapsed near the Biniyar town in North Kashmir’s Uri Town.

There was fear and chaos across the Kashmir valley, as people had a sleepless night on Thursday who kept a close watch on the increasing flood situation.

Residents of the areas living on the banks of the Jehlum River in Srinagar city and other areas of the valley also spent the night on the roads under the heavy rains and authorities rescued the trapped people at several places.

“My family didn’t slept for the entire night. This is for the first time in my life I have seen such a situation,” Burhan Khalid, from Srinagar’s Rambagh area said. “Just only God can save us from this fury.”

Meanwhile, the situation across the Kashmir valley continues to remain grim with more areas getting submerged in the city and other districts. “There is an alarming situation across the Kashmir valley,” Javed Jafer, a government official, told The Indian Express. “So far the Srinagar city is stable, but the worry is that more areas in the city are getting inundated.”

The state government has also called special teams of the National Disaster Rescue Force from Ambala in Haryana for the rescue operations. “ Special teams of NDRF are reaching Srinagar today and they would be dispatched to those parts of Kashmir where rescue operation are going on,” Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah said.
